Swim training tips for the Bantham Swoosh & Boomerang – supporting Level Water

Written by Lydia Burdett /

Next weekend, the Red team will be heading down the road from our South Devon HQ to one of our nearest estuaries to take part in a special wild swimming weekend – the Bantham Swoosh and Boomerang are 12th & 13th July 2025 respectively.

As proud partners of Level Water, we’re not just sponsoring the events – a few of us will be swimming the Swoosh too. Racing 6km down the River Avon from Aveton Gifford, with the ebbing tide pulling ever-stronger all the way down to Bantham Beach. While many other Red team members will be volunteering, cheering, soaking in the atmosphere, and helping everyone stay warm, dry and comfortable by the water.

We love these events not only because they offer such incredible outdoor swim experiences – but because 100% of the profits go to Level Water, an inspiring charity providing 1-to-1 swimming lessons for children with disabilities.

Ahead of the 2025 Bantham Swoosh and Boomerang, we asked three Red Swooshers for their top swim training tips – and the essential Red gear they won’t go swimming without…

Cat – Lead Designer / Product Developer

Training Tip?

“Train in as similar conditions / location as possible so you’re fully prepared for race day conditions. Practise ‘sighting’ in every swim you do, so you build your neck muscles. On race day you don’t want to risk swimming further than you need to by keeping your head down.”

Essential Red Gear?

Pursuit Robe – a brilliant lightweight robe to chuck on after the swim to manage your core temperature.”

Phil – Head of Design & ESG

Training Tip?

“Don’t try anything new on race day. And swim your own race – I’m personally trying this approach, which is really difficult as a sprinter if someone overtakes me. But ultimately, I may overtake them later on – or I might not. Either way, my time will be my measure.”

Essential Red Gear?

“I’d definitely recommend the Dry Pouch for race day. It’s great for keeping all those little bits you have with you — like caps, goggles, earplugs, nose-clip, body lube, etc. And if you’ve got anything more valuable, like keys or your phone, you can put them in too; knowing it’s padded, watertight, and will even float if it ends up in the water.”

Katie – Customer Experience Executive

Training Tip?

“My top tip would just be getting as much time in the water as possible. I’ve been slowly building up the distance and trying to find new ways to train and make it interesting, like starting to do sets! Also training with a friend makes it more fun.”

Essential Red Gear?

“My favourite bit of Red kit has to be the Waterproof Tote Bag – it’s a must-take every time I swim, outdoors or in the pool. Being able to chuck all my wet stuff in, with plenty of room for all the kit I need in one bag, is a lifesaver.”

Join Sunday’s Bantham Boomerang

How far can you swim before the tide turns? There may still be time to sign up for Sunday 13th July’s Bantham Boomerang – a ride-the-tide wild swim challenge up and down the same beautiful Avon Estuary as the fully-booked Swoosh. Depending on your speed, the route can range from 5 to 10km – and just like the Swoosh, it ends with that exhilarating tide-assisted ‘whoosh’ back to Bantham Beach.
