Why MSL Technology Creates The Best Paddle Boards
Written by Luke Green /
Inflatable paddle boards have come a long way since first bursting into the mainstream. The very first generation of boards exhibited their fair share of problems: limited rigidity, leaky seams, and inconsistent layering. They relied on glueing multiple layers of PVC together, often creating inconsistencies and manufacturing defects, adding unnecessary weight and resulting in reduced flexibility over time. Safe to say, improvements in quality were needed to deliver the SUP experience enthusiasts deserved.
At Red, we decided to do something about this and have spent over 15 years developing our own high-performance material: MSL technology.
What is MSL?
In contrast to the early construction methods of inflatable paddle boards, MSL is a performance high-density drop-stitch material which involves machine welding a layer of PVC to the drop-stitch core during production, eliminating the need for manual glueing. Designed to be inflated to 15-22 pounds per square inch (PSI) without the risk of overexpansion, MSL mimics the feel of a hard paddle board, providing a more stable and responsive ride while also keeping the board lightweight and free from the weak points we’ve seen in boards of the past.
Since the creation of our standard MSL, we’ve also evolved the technology further with the creation of both MSL800 and MSL1000. These materials utilise a refined weave pattern to make the boards just as stiff but even lighter and perfect for taking pretty much anywhere.

Performance-First Paddleboarding
We designed MSL with optimum performance in mind, not just in terms of how the board feels on the water but how easy it is to transport out of it too. In fact, one of the most immediately noticeable benefits of the MSL construction process is the effect on the overall weight of the paddleboard. This weight reduction makes carrying, transporting and handling the board both on and off the water easier. Compared to a traditional dual-layer inflatable SUP, an MSL inflatable paddle board offers maximum convenience without sacrificing performance.
More experienced paddleboarders will also notice the performance advantages of an MSL board due to the superior finish compared to that of traditionally laminated SUPs. The surface is smoother, more uniform and less prone to imperfections, not only improving the overall appearance but also the aerodynamics and hydrodynamics, making it glide more efficiently.
Are MSL Boards Worth It?
Perhaps we’re a little biased, but it really does take one use of an MSL paddle board to realise they’re more than worth it. While an MSL paddle board may be more expensive than standard inflatable SUPs, they offer unmatched value in terms of performance, longevity and ease of use.
Whether you’re a beginner seeking stability, a touring paddler in need of efficiency, or a racer seeking speed, an MSL board from Red is the gold standard and a premium choice that ensures the best experience on the water.
