5 Winter Wellness Tips for Staying Healthy | Firepot Food
Written by Lydia Burdett /
The days are getting shorter and the mornings colder but this time of year can give us some of the most magical days of the year to get out and have an adventure. There are some things you need to do a bit differently as we head towards winter - like packing more layers and making sure you’ve got waterproofs with you - but looking after your immune system is one way you can prepare for getting outdoors as the weather gets colder.
Firepot make award-winning healthy, nutritious meals ready for adventure from their base in Dorset. They take the freshest ingredients and cook a whole meal just as you would do at home. It’s then slowly dehydrated, preserving all the flavours and textures ready for you to rehydrate - making sure you can eat well in the wild. Their food has been taken all over the world, from polar expeditions to rows across oceans, so they know a thing or two about how to fuel yourself for an adventure. Here are some of their top tips for staying healthy as the weather changes.
- Get outside at least once a day to keep your vitamin D topped up.
We all need Vitamin D for promoting healthy bones, muscles, but also for bolstering our mood and immune function. There’s no supplement you can take that’s as good as natural daylight, so get out at least once a day to keep your supplies topped up. - Stay hydrated
Whether your drink cold water or a steaming hot cuppa, it’s important to stay hydrated at this time of year. Hydration helps with the production of saliva, which keeps unwanted germs from finding their way into our bodies, so drinking plenty of fluids helps you fight those annoying winter colds. And if you’re hiking, cycling, or climbing, you’ll need to drink even more to make up for the sweat! - Eat a balanced and nutrient-rich diet
At this time of year, what you eat can make a big difference to how well your body fights off germs. Eating as many whole foods as possible - like fibre-rich fruit and vegetables, plant-based protein and wholegrain - will support your gut microbiome, which is a huge factor in keeping you immune system healthy. Similarly, foods which have lots of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants - superfoods like beans, broccoli, lentils and leafy greens - all support energy levels and immunity. Seasonal foods are the best for this, and there’s plenty around at this time of year to help! - Try and keep stress levels low
Stress directly impacts our immune systems - the higher our cortisol, the less well our systems fight off infections. Spending time outdoors, whether that’s swimming, hiking or simply sitting and soaking up the view, can reduce our stress levels and keep our systems healthy. Meaning we can go and adventure outdoors more - so it’s a bit of a chicken and egg cycle! - Sleep well!
A good night’s sleep is vital to our health - our bodies repair themselves each night and help produce the antibodies you need to keep fighting off infection, as well as keeping energy levels nice and high.
