Swimming with purpose: Red takes on the Bantham Swoosh for Level Water

Written by Lydia Burdett /

This summer, four team members from Red HQ in South Devon took the plunge at the iconic Bantham Swoosh. The Swoosh is an unforgettable 6km open water swim down our stunning local River Avon estuary, from Aveton Gifford to Bantham – all in support of Level Water: a charity championing access to swimming for children with disabilities.

As proud sponsors of the event, Red is committed to supporting initiatives that open up the outdoors to everyone, and the Bantham Swoosh perfectly embodies that spirit. With 800 swimmers taking part on the Saturday alone, it was an inspiring day of adventure, camaraderie, and charitable fun.

Fresh Challenge

For some, it was their first long-distance swim; for others, a return to the wild water with a renewed sense of purpose. As Katie Mailling from Red shared:

“I loved my first Bantham Swoosh! After being talked into it by my colleagues as a good challenge to take on this summer, I was super-apprehensive about the distance… But now, I’m so grateful my colleagues gave me that push to enter. From training as a team and keeping each other accountable, to swimming it together at the fantastic Level Water event, I thoroughly enjoyed every minute and couldn’t recommend it more!”

Inclusive Accessibility

For another team member, Phil Hawthorne, the event’s inclusive and welcoming atmosphere stood out just as much as the swim itself:

“What I’ve found with these open water events – and really like – is the openness and accessibility of them… I had no idea how much Level Water is actually doing for the grassroots of swimming, and I’m such a passionate advocate for making swimming as accessible as possible… Swimming has given and continues to give me so much, and being able to play a small part in raising some money to help others access the water, while also getting the chance to swim in nature, is an absolute privilege.”

The Power of Swimming

From early starts and tidal turns to moments of reflection mid-swim, the Bantham Swoosh was more than just a physical challenge – it was a powerful reminder of why we swim, and who we swim for. For the Red team, it was a chance to connect with nature, push personal limits, and most importantly, help Level Water continue their incredible work making swimming accessible to every child who deserves the chance to experience it.

We’re proud to have supported this event, not just as sponsors, but as participants united by purpose. And whether you’re a seasoned swimmer or just curious about open water, we can honestly say: there’s nothing quite like the Swoosh.
