On Western Australia’s south coast, the ocean shapes almost every day for the Peake family. From paddles and surf sessions to incredible dolphin encounters before breakfast, time on the water is at the heart of family life. We had to find out more…
G’day! We’re the Peake family, a crew of four based on the south coast of Western Australia. Living near some of the world’s most stunning beaches means we’re down at the water almost every day. Whether we’re spying whales off the point, fishing from the shore, paddling, surfing, diving, jet-skiing or spotting incredible marine life, there’s always something magic happening out there.
Being together is everything to us – and the water is where we feel most alive. Since we started home-schooling, the flexibility has meant mornings at the beach are a regular ritual, especially while the winds are light. You might find us sneaking in a paddle, catching a few waves, or swimming with the local pod of dolphins before breakfast.
We’re an outdoorsy, adventure-seeking bunch, and the water just brings out the best in us. There’s real physical and mental freedom in being out there, and some of our favourite family memories have happened on the water. We’ve surfed alongside southern right whales and glided through crystal-clear bays with pods of dolphins. It’s pretty hard to top that.
Absolutely! One of our first paddleboard outings was unforgettable. The kids were just getting used to balancing past the breakers when a massive pod of about 60 dolphins circled around us. They were curious, splashing, and playing – and hung with us for ages. Since then, they recognise us and often pop back with their new calves. From the water, it almost feels like we’re part of their community.
For starters, the wheeled case is a game-changer. It’s easy to tow around and packs the board away in a flash. Pumping up doesn’t take forever, and we even turn it into a bit of a warm-up session. The board feels solid and stable; even as total beginners, we were standing and paddling in no time.
Size-wise, we love it. It’s big enough to share but still easy to paddle, stable and confidence-boosting. It’s become a staple in our family’s fitness and playtime adventures.
A SUP can bring the whole family together. Before our 10'8" Ride, we’d never paddled one – now the kids (aged 6 and 9) are cruising around bays, beaches, lagoons, and inlets with confidence. And when Mum and Dad get a turn? There’s nothing like gliding across calm water in the quiet moments.
Because we’re home-schooling, we’ve got some big plans! Next up: exploring the crystal waters of Esperance, adventuring east into South Australia, and heading north to warmer spots like Coral Bay and Exmouth. With our 10'8" Ride in tow, this year’s shaping up to be one full of waves, smiles, and new stories.
