Red x Surfing WA: A Record-Breaking Whalebone Classic

Cottesloe’s Isolated Reef turned it on, with some classic winter conditions delivering an ideal arena for the 27th Lavan Whalebone Longboard Classic. This iconic event attracted its biggest-ever field, bringing the longboarding community together to celebrate the style, tradition and community that make longboarding in WA so special.

As long-term partners of Surfing WA, our Perth Red Equipment Team spent the weekend on the sand: watching heats, backing competitors, and getting feedback on our gear from the longboard surf community.

A Record-Breaking Classic 

This year’s Whalebone drew its biggest field yet, with a record 167 competitors in more than 80 heats across the three-day event, spanning juniors through to the over-65s. Finals day delivered the kind of classic winter conditions Iso’s is famous for, perfect for both rail work and old-school nose rides. 

In the Lavan Open Men’s Final, Dunsborough’s Jack Medland put together the highest two-wave total of the event (16.66) to claim his first-ever Whalebone Open title, holding off Albany’s Evan Ledger. 

On the women’s side, Perth’s Georgia Young continued to rewrite the record books, claiming an extraordinary 10th Whalebone title in the Lavan Open Women’s Final – proof that her dominance at Cottesloe shows no signs of slowing. She also backed it up with victory in the Open Women’s Logger. 

We were especially stoked to see Anthony Spencer put together a standout weekend, taking out both the Red Equipment Open Men’s Logger and the prestigious Gage Roads Old Mal division. 

Red to the Bone 

Across all three days, the Red Equipment tent at Isolated Reef was stocked and ready: EVO Pro Waterproof Change Robes, Poncho Towelling Robes and Beanies, built to keep competitors warm, dry and comfortable between heats.

It meant a lot to have our name on the board too. Watching the Red Equipment Open Men’s Logger division and seeing Anthony Spencer lift the trophy was a highlight of our weekend on the beach. 

Down the Line: Red x Surfing WA 

Our partnership with Surfing WA runs deeper than one weekend at Cottesloe. It’s part of a long-term commitment to backing surf culture in WA from the grassroots up, and the Whalebone Classic remains one of the best examples of what that partnership looks like in action.
