How to Repair & Maintain an Inflatable Paddleboard

Written by Lydia Burdett /

Red inflatable paddleboards are built to handle many years of adventures on the water. But as with any piece of outdoor equipment, a little care goes a long way. Regular maintenance doesn’t just help extend the life of your board – it keeps it performing at its best every time you paddle. Here’s how to keep your board in good condition, spot small issues early, and make simple repairs such as re-attaching cargo points, re-gluing finboxes or moulded iFins, and applying small patches.

Regular Care & Maintenance

Looking after your inflatable paddleboard doesn’t take much time, but it can make a huge difference to its lifespan.

Making Small Repairs Yourself

Many small surface repairs can be completed at home with the right adhesive and a little patience.

When Should You Seek Professional Repairs?

While small punctures, accessory pads and component repairs are often straightforward, not every repair should be tackled at home. If you are not confident or unsure we always recommend seeking professional advice and services – especially if there is any air escaping from the board.

If your board has large tears, rail damage, major seam separation, or structural damage that could affect its integrity, it’s always best to seek professional help.

Red doesn’t currently offer an in-house repair service, but for structural repairs we recommend contacting an independent SUP, RIB or marine repair specialist. Professional repair services have the equipment and expertise to restore more serious damage safely and effectively.

Re-gluing a Fin

If a finbox or moulded fin begins to detach, a two-part PVC repair adhesive is the recommended solution. This type of adhesive creates a strong, durable bond designed specifically for PVC inflatable products.

  • Clean both surfaces thoroughly before applying the adhesive.
  • Follow the adhesive manufacturer’s instructions carefully.
  • Allow plenty of curing time before using the board.

Repairing Small Punctures and Leaks

Small punctures can usually be repaired using a PVC repair patch.

  • Before applying a patch, make sure the damaged area is completely clean and dry.
  • Use the correct PVC adhesive for the repair.
  • Cut the patch with rounded edges, apply adhesive to both the board and the rough side of the patch, then allow it to go tacky before sticking it down.
  • Press the patch down firmly to remove trapped air.
  • Leave the repair to cure fully before inflating and using the board.

If you’re unsure where the leak is coming from, inflate the board and work around it carefully with soapy water – starting at the valve, then checking the rails, deck and accessories. Escaping air will create bubbles.

Re-attaching Cargo Points

If a cargo point or small accessory pad has lifted from the board, a fast-curing adhesive such as Loctite 401 can be suitable for smaller repairs.

A successful repair generally follows these steps:

  • Inflate the board to approximately 15psi.
  • Clean both surfaces using acetone or acetone-based nail varnish remover.
  • Mask around the repair area with tape to keep excess glue off the board.
  • Apply a thin layer of adhesive to both surfaces.
  • Press firmly into position, working from the centre outwards to remove any trapped air.
  • Maintain firm pressure for around five minutes – a wooden or metal spoon can help you apply firm, even pressure without wrecking your thumbs.
  • Place a weight onto the repair for at least eight hours if possible.
  • Leave the adhesive to cure for 24 hours before using the board.

Because Loctite 401 cures very quickly, it’s important to line everything up before the surfaces make contact. Wear disposable gloves, consider eye protection, and work very carefully.

Prevention is Better Than Repair

The easiest repair is the one you never have to make.

Avoid dragging your board over rough ground, keep it away from sharp objects, rinse it after every adventure, and inspect it regularly. A few minutes of maintenance can add years to the life of your inflatable paddleboard.

With the right care – and the correct repair products when needed – you can keep your board performing properly, avoid unnecessary waste, and enjoy many more seasons on the water.
