All-Action Hero: the Adventure Waterproof Backpack in Netflix’s Apex
Written by Lydia Burdett /
We were recently tipped off by a sharp-eyed customer that our Adventure Waterproof Backpack has been featured in the new Netflix thriller, Apex. And now it’s streaming, we’re blown away: our pack hasn’t just made a cameo – it’s landed a major supporting role!
Set in the unforgiving wilds of the Australian Outback, Apex stars Charlize Theron as a mountain climber and whitewater kayaker forced into a brutal cat-and-mouse fight for survival. And the Adventure Waterproof Backpack is her character’s sole reliable companion as she navigates rapids, rainforests, and rockfaces to escape her maniacal pursuer, played by Taron Egerton.
Here’s the kicker: this wasn’t product placement or any kind of collaboration. After extensive testing, the production team organically chose our backpack – which really says something.
What did we know?
Not much at all! Back in 2024, the Props Master reached out to our Australian team looking for a waterproof bag that could tackle whatever was thrown at it. Nothing specific was said about the film – all we were told was it needed to be able to survive whitewater rapids in the Blue Mountains. So we loaned them some demo kit from our waterproof bag range … then to be perfectly honest, thought little more about it.
Until now. Looking back at subsequent orders, our Obsidian Black Adventure Waterproof Backpack clearly aced the auditions as the production team quietly went on to buy five packs directly from our website.
After watching the full film, we’re flattered and excited to see it featuring so prominently – keeping essentials dry and protected in the most extreme conditions, surviving some incredible stunts. Exactly the kind of environment it was designed to thrive in, but we never expected to watch it do so in a blockbuster movie.
Of course, there’s always creative licence in filmmaking: although Apex is set in the Australian Outback, it was actually filmed within just a couple of hours of Sydney. Confirmed locations include Ginninderra Falls, Glenbrook Gorge, Jellybean Pool, the Royal National Park south of Sydney, and caves you can only swim to within the Blue Mountains National Park.
Why was the Adventure Waterproof Backpack cast?
In a survival thriller, your gear has to look like it belongs in the wilderness. It needs to be credible for a character taking on serious terrain and wild waterways – it has to be capable. The 30L Adventure Waterproof Backpack was built for extreme conditions just like this.
Constructed from recycled 420D nylon with a double-sided TPU coating, this pack is practically indestructible. Unlike standard PVC bags, our eco-conscious TPU coating is tough, supple and hard-wearing – exactly the kind of durability you’d need for harsh terrain, sheer rockfaces and serious whitewater.
Made for the elements
The stunt acting requirements for this bag look intense – full immersion, repeated knocks, and relentless scrapes. Fortunately, the Adventure Waterproof Backpack’s technical specs more than hold their own:
Total waterproofing: the combination of a reliable roll-top closure and fully welded seams ensures a 100% watertight seal.
Abrasion resistance: a reinforced base allows the pack to be dropped onto rocks, sand, or pebbles without a second thought.
Smart storage: dry external stash pockets with colour-coded zips – IPX5 for the fully waterproof zipper and IPX2 for water resistance – keeping essentials accessible but protected.
Technical versatility: with a MOLLE ladder system and an elasticated bungee cargo system, the pack is ready for everything from climbing carabiners to trekking poles.
Comfort when it counts
If you’re being pursued through the Outback – or just hiking a coastal path – the last thing you want to feel is your bag. We’ve carefully designed this pack to be forgettable in use. It features breathable, ergonomically padded back panels and enhanced cooling foam shoulder straps to ensure maximum ventilation and weight distribution.
We’ve even kept safety in mind with reflective detailing and an integral emergency whistle built directly into the chest-strap buckle – great for attracting attention when you need it. (Although we’ll admit: fleeing from a psychopathic maniac wasn’t exactly one of our intended use cases.)
Real-world reliability
While we’re stoked to see our kit chosen for its ‘on-screen’ credibility, its true value lies in how it performs for you. Thankfully, most real-life adventures are a little less intense – but whether your day involves spray, rain, mud or full-on waterside chaos, your kit stays properly protected in the Adventure Waterproof Backpack.
Of course, no-one’s standard day involves being hunted through the Australian wilderness – but similar principles still apply. If you’re carrying gear by the water, heading out in bad weather, travelling light for a wild weekend away, or simply want a backpack that can take more punishment than an ordinary daypack, you want something that’s designed to cope when life gets messy. And that’s when our 30L Adventure Waterproof Backpack comes into its own.
Apex is now streaming on Netflix.
