SUP yoga is a form of paddle boarding that’s been rapidly increasing in popularity over the last few years. It’s pretty different from your standard SUP experience, swapping endurance and exploration with mindfulness practice and a test of core strength. We’d highly recommend giving it a go, whether that’s as a chance to switch off from your daily stresses or improve your fitness in a new way.
If you want to try SUP yoga, it’s great to know that there’s a wide range of classes and tasters popping up near and far. However, what makes this form of paddle boarding so accessible is that it’s also something that you can practice in your own time. You just need the right kit to do so. That’s where we come in, and we’ve compiled the ultimate SUP yoga starter kit list below.
The main piece of kit you need for a productive SUP yoga session is, of course, your chosen board. Unlike more traditional forms of the sport, SUP yoga needs a particularly stable platform that is up to the job of supporting your weight and the movements you’ll be completing. While there’s no harm in starting out with a versatile all-round board, something that is purpose-built with a wide deck and non-slip features will stand you in good stead moving forward.
Our 10’8” Activ MSL inflatable SUP yoga paddle board has been carefully crafted as the ultimate SUP yoga foundation, with an impressive 32” width and extra stiffness providing an incredibly stable surface. It’s built to endure standing poses, flows, and balances without sending you into the water (although that’s sometimes inevitable and part of the fun!), all whilst being easy to inflate and deflate pre- and post-session.
While most people tend to practice SUP yoga in just a swimming costume or lightweight active clothing, you’ll still need layers for when you’re back on land. This means that a good quality changing robe, like our market-leading EVO Pro waterproof changing robe, is an absolute essential for SUP yoga.
With a roomy, oversized fit designed to make changing easy and a soft sherpa-fleece lining for warmth and cosiness, it’s the ultimate companion for before and after your session and makes getting changed out of your swimwear incredibly easy. It’s also 100% waterproof, giving you peace of mind that your new feelings of mindfulness aren’t ruined if you’re caught in a downpour.
For the ultimate cosy yoga aesthetic, we’d always recommend adding a soft beanie like our Flow Organic Cotton beanie to your SUP yoga kit list. After all, SUP yoga is all about balance and focus and keeping warmth on your head can really enhance this feeling. This beanie is particularly soft and breathable, so it provides a great extra layer without being bulky.
If you’re worried about wearing it on board and it getting wet, a trusty beanie is still a great item of SUP yoga kit for your warm-ups and cool downs. Plus, the earthy and simple design of this one pairs perfectly with the relaxed and mindful vibe of any yoga session.
Last but not least, every SUP yoga kit list should include a bag that keeps your essentials safe. We’d always suggest a small roll-top dry bag for this kind of activity, as it’s ideal for stashing your phone, keys, and purse close by while you complete your session.
With a roll top and buckle closure, ours clips neatly onto your board and keeps everything secure and waterproof even when submerged. This gives you the peace of mind to really focus on your practice without fear of any slip or tumble into the water!
With these basics covered, you should be well on your way to finding out what SUP yoga is all about. Of course, if you have any questions or need any advice about any of the kit you need for SUP yoga, simply get in touch with our expert team who will be happy to help.
