It is hard to think of anything better to do on a sunny day than enjoy the water, from paddleboarding to swimming or even just lounging at the beach with the family. However, there are several things you will want to take into consideration when planning to be near the water. For example, the water will reflect UV light, and a cool breeze or a refreshing swim may cause you to underestimate how much you are exposed to the sun. Prepare for the heat by checking out our guide on how to stay protected from the sun.
In addition to checking the weather forecast before you head out to enjoy the water, you should also look at the UV index. The UV index is a measure of how intense the ultraviolet radiation from the sun is. If the forecast indicates high UV levels, the next tips on how to stay protected from the sun will help.
Sunscreen is essential when you plan to be outside for extended periods of time. You should use at least SPF 30 with a UVA star rating of at least 4, and since you will be in the water, choose a water-resistant sunscreen. Do not forget to put sunscreen on your ears, neck and the tops of your feet. It is very important to note that water resistance does not mean you can apply sunscreen once and then forget about it. Always reapply sunscreen after swimming, sweating or towelling dry.
While applying sunscreen is one method of protecting yourself from the sun, wearing UV protection clothing, such as a Performance T-Shirt from Red, is another important one. Wearing UV protection clothing provides additional layers of protection that limit the amount of skin exposed to direct sunlight, and is especially helpful on longer days spent outdoors.
Your skin is not the only area of concern when it comes to sun protection - sunglasses are necessary to protect your eyes as well. Polarised sunglasses are highly recommended for paddling, kayaking and other watersports because they minimise glare produced by reflected sunlight on the surface of the water. Consider purchasing a sunglasses retention strap too, to prevent losing your sunglasses underwater in case you fall in.
As with any prolonged outdoor activity, proper hydration is crucial. Spending hours in warm conditions while physically active will lead to dehydration. Make sure you bring enough drinking water and place it within easy reach throughout your activities. Get yourself an Insulated Stainless Steel Water Bottle to ensure it remains cool for extended periods of time.
Finally, keep in mind that feeling cool does not mean you are safe from sunburn. Cooling off with a swim in the water can distract you from how much sun exposure you are experiencing and make you feel like you’re a lot less exposed than you actually are. Track how long you have been outside, reapply sunscreen frequently and pay attention to how you feel overall.
