When I first set foot in Molveno, Italy, for the Ice Swimming World Championships, I knew I was about to embark on something extraordinary. Ice swimming is not for the faint-hearted! It’s a test of endurance, mental strength, and sheer resilience. With over 700 swimmers from more than 45 countries, the atmosphere was nothing short of electric, and the sense of community was something I will never forget.

Despite the extreme temperatures, the energy among competitors was warm and inviting. We were all there for the same reason- to push our limits and celebrate the sport we love.

Competing in ice swimming requires a unique mindset. As I plunged into the below 2-degree water, my body instinctively reacted to the shock. Each stroke was a battle against the cold, yet also a moment of pure exhilaration. The roaring cheers from spectators and fellow swimmers fuelled my determination, making every second in the water feel like a major achievement.

One of the most incredible aspects of this championship was the community. Ice swimmers come from all walks of life, yet we are united by our shared passion for the sport. It didn’t matter where we were from- whether it was an American Olympian, a 14 year old English girl or a disabled swimmer from Germany, everyone was supportive, encouraging, and eager to share their experiences.

The post-race moments were just as memorable as the competition itself. Huddling together with fellow swimmers, exchanging stories, and celebrating each other’s successes created a bond that transcended nationalities. There was no rivalry, only respect and admiration for those willing to embrace the challenge of swimming in icy waters.

Beyond the competition, Molveno itself was a breathtaking location. Nestled in the Dolomites, the scenery was spectacular. The snow-capped mountains and the pristine lake provided the perfect backdrop for such an intense event.

For anyone considering ice swimming, I can only say this: do it and don’t look back. The sport is challenging, but the rewards- both physical and emotional- are beyond measure. I am already looking forward to my next icy challenge, knowing that I am part of a truly remarkable global family.
